T: First of all, will you open the door, please? ( P1 does so.) Now what have you just done? P1: I have opened the door. T: Good. Ill write your answers on the blackboard. I have opened the door. T: ( To P2) What has P1 just done? He has opened the door. T: Now write your name on the blackboard.( He writes) What have you just done? I have written my name. T: What has P1 done? He has written his name. T: And what have I just asked you? You have asked me a question. T: Shake hands with each other. What have they done done? They have shaken hands. T: Now, all the class, close your books. What have you just done? We have closed our books. T: Now, look at these sentences on the board. I want to put a line under all the verbs. I have opened the door. I have written my name. He has opened the door. He has written his name. We have closed our books. You have asked me a question. They have shaken hands. Notice that all these verbs have two parts. The first is have (or has), the second is called the Past Participle. We have already learned three forms of irregular verbs with you. So, you see that we need them now because we are now taking the Present Perfect tense.

Contrast the Present Perfect and the Past Simple. I saw your friend a minute ago. I have just seen your friend. He finished his work last week. He has finished his work this week. The taxi arrived in time yesterday. The taxi has always arrived in time. We were at home last Sunday. We have been at home this Sunday. I didnt know him last year. I havent known him for many years. She went to London last summer holidays. She has been to London three times. They lived in Moscow 10 years ago. They have lived in Moscow for 10 years. We studied English last year. We have studied English since the 2-nd form.

The Present Perfect tense чаще всего переводится на русский язык глаголом в прошедшем времени. I have read this book. – Я читал ( прочитал, прочел ) эту книгу. I have never been there. – Я никогда там не был. Если The Present Perfect tense употребляется для выражения действия, начавшегося в прошлом и продолжающегося по настоящий момент, то предложения переводятся настоящим временем. How long have you lived in Moscow? – Сколько времени вы живете в Москве? I have lived in Moscow since Я живу в Москве с 1997 года.

Remember! The Present Perfect tense is used for an action that is just finished. It is used when we are thinking more of the present result ( up to now) than about the past action. The Simple Past tense is used when we are thinking of an action completed in the past.

A game Diaries. Pupils write in their diaries one imaginary thing they have done this week, hiding the page from their partner. Pupils work in pairs and ask questions in order to guess the note in the diary. Afterwards, ask pupils to read their diaries aloud. P1: Have you made a nice pizza this week? P2: Yes, I have. (No, I have not.)

Start by playing this game round the class but then pupils can continue in small groups. - What did you do yesterday? (last week, two days ago, on Sunday, etc.) - I did something I have never done before. (write, sing, buy, drink, eat, break, wear, take, read, get, learn, hear, find, say)

Point out the Present Perfect tense in the song: Peter has just received the letter from Joe. Susies just bought a brand new puppy. And hes just seen a cat in the train. Ive just returned from the grocers shop. The grocers just told me a funny story. Yes, its only half past three. Refrain: Weve just been for a swim, The leaves are beginning to spin, Were going home now, Here comes a boy in his brand new car. Hes just met his girl friends mother. I think he needs a strong cup of tea. And its only half past three. Yes, its only half past three. The days are just beginning to fade away, The street lights have just begun to shine. Ive just discovered my watch isnt working Its only half past three.

Read English proverbs with the Present Perfect tense. Look at these proverbs and try to find Russian equivalents: 1. As you have made your bed, so you must lie on. 2. Who has never tasted bitter, knows not what is sweet. 3. Whatever man has done, man can do. 4. When children stand quiet they have done something ill. 5. Dont sell the bears skin before you have caught the bear. 6. The mountain has brought forth a mouth. 7. A thief passes for a gentleman when stealing has made him rich. 8. A lot of / much water has run under the bridge. 9. We know not what is good until we have lost it. 10. Every oak has been an acorn.

You know the names of the days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. But do you know where these names come from? If you carefully at the word Sunday, you may guess that it comes from Sun-day, the day of the Sun. The name of the second day, Monday, comes from the word Moon; so Monday is the day of the Moon. The names of the other days of the week are connected ( связаны ) with the names of different gods and planets. For example, the word Thursday comes from the name of the God Thor. He was the German god of thunder (гром ), and even now you can sometimes meet the word Thunder day which is the other name for Thursday. The word Friday comes from the name of the old German goddess Frig who was the goddess of beauty. The last day of the week is Saturday. The first part of this word, Saturn, is Latin. It is the name of the god and the planet. The second part of the word is English. So Saturday is the day of Saturn. Read the story and find answers to the following questions: Where have the names of the week come from?

What words has Peter given instead of the days of the week? One day Peter asked his friend Victor, How many days are there in a week? Why, seven, of course, answered Victor. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Well, Victor, can you name days of the week and not say them. No, I cant. Can you? asked Victor. Yes, of course, I can. They are: today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, yesterday, the day before yesterday, three days ago and four days ago, said Peter.

Play a miming game to practice the Present Perfect. One pupil mimes and the rest of the group guess what has happened to him/her: e.g.P2 looks for something in all his pockets: P1: Have you lost your keys? P2: No, I havent. P3: Have you lost your money? P2: No, I havent. P4: Have you lost your tickets? P2: Yes! It is then the next pupils turn to mime. Write sentences using the following situations: You have done quite a lot in your life already. Name some of the things you have done. Mention when you did them. e.g. Ive learned to ride a bicycle. I learned it two years ago.

A puzzle: Hidden Animals The name of the animal is hidden in each sentence. Can you find the names ? I have met Eric at school. I havent found the path or seen the way home. You havent done your homework. Do get up.

Have you ever seen a tiger Hunting in the wild? Have you ever eaten ice cream In the sun and smiled? Have you ever raised some money For a hungry child? Together in this world we share. Lets help children everywhere. Have you ever watched a comet? Cross the sky at speed? Have you ever grown a sunflower From a tiny seed? Have you ever raised some money For a child in need? Together in this world we share. Lets help children everywhere. The song Have you ever?

Practice questions in the Present Perfect but the task is not to say the words yes or no. Use the following phrases: I dont think I have. Of course, I have. Im sure, I have. Im sorry, I havent Have you ever seen wild animals? Have you ever heard jazz? Have you ever drunk cocktail? Have you ever been to London? Have you ever flown a helicopter? Have you ever read a foreign book? Have you ever told lies? (etc.)

More practice with the Present Perfect. Provide vocabulary for this where necessary. Im no longer thirsty, because … (I have had a glass of water, I have just drunk juice ) Im no longer hungry, because (I have had dinner, I have eaten a sandwich ) My head is no longer aching, because… (I have taken a medicine, I have had a sleep ) John is not at home. Do you know where John is? He… (has gone to school, he has taken a dog for a walk ) You look tired. I wonder where… (you have been, you have gone to ) Ive heard… (you have swum in the ocean, he has been to America )

Read the joke and find sentences with the Present Perfect. What is the matter? It is six oclock in the evening. Nellys father has just come home from work. Now he wants to have a bath. He takes his hairbrush and goes to the bathroom where he sees his daughter talking to a cat, You have had a bath and you must dry yourself with the towel. You see, father has brought us a hairbrush. The father calls the mother. Have you already finished, Nelly? Why? Thats your fathers towel! Now stop that and let the cat go, says mother angrily. Why, Mum? We have tidied all rooms and then we have had a bath. What is the matter? After a bath I usually dry my cat with this towel, answers Nelly.

Practice new dialogues and act out the scenes. Work in pairs, making up your own dialogues. This can be done for homework. - You have a lot of books at home. Have you read them all? - What is more, some of them I have read several times. - Have you got books by English and American writers? - Yes, I have. But all of them are in Russian translation. - Here is a wonderful book Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Have you read it? - I dont think I have. - Are you fond of English writers? - Yes, of course I am. I havent read the book Robinson Crusoe, but I have seen the film. If the book is as good as you say, Ill read it. - What a wonderful book I have read recently! - I have never read such an interesting book before. - Which book has interested you so? - Oliver Twist by Dickens. - Have you read many English books this year? - I wouldnt say that. Just a couple. - Have you finished the book Treasure Island by Stevenson? - No, I havent. - Oh! You have kept this book for two weeks already. Now its my turn to read it. - Sorry, but I have been ill all this time. - Do you promise to return it after Sunday? - Sure! I have always kept my promises. - As for me, I dont like to read fast. I forget half of what I - have read before I come to the end. - I agree with you fully. I think its better to read less and remember more.

A game P2: Have you heard Chinese music? P2: Have you seen a Chinese film? P2: Have you seen the Chinese alphabet? P2: Have you seen the national Chinese fight? P1: Have you been to China? P2: I havent been to China. P1: Have you seen China on TV? P2: Ive seen China on TV. P1: Have you read about China in a book? P2: Have you read Chinese horoscopes? P1: Yes, of course – oh dear! P2: Have you ever met a Chinese girl or boy? P1: I havent met a Chinese girl or boy. P2: Have you eaten Chinese food? P1: Ive eaten Chinese food. P2: No – oops, your turn! When pupils have had the chance to play the game with their partners, ask them to choose one of the countries they prefer and speak about it like this: Ive never been to China, but Ive seen it on TV. Its a very big country. Ive never met Chinese people, Ive seen them only on TV. Ive heard about Chinese fights and Ive seen many films about them. Ive never eaten Chinese food. I have always wanted to eat it. My parents have been to the Chinese restaurant and they have liked it very much. Ive heard the Chinese music and it is very beautiful. Ive seen the Chinese alphabet and Ive heard that it is one of the most difficult languages in the world.

For further practice of the Present Perfect the pupils are given the following situation: In your dreams you have been to many foreign countries. Where have you been? What have you seen there? Pupils work in pairs, asking about different countries. Provide the following sentences to make their dialogues authentic: I havent seen you for a long time. Where have you been all this time? How long have you been there? Have you seen many places of interest? I have been very busy. I have just come from… I have always wanted to visit… I have heard and read so much about…

Listen to the text about Victors invitation to America and answer what countries he has already been to and with what purpose. An invitation Ive got great news. Ive got a letter from Richard. It came last week. He has invited me to visit him in the States. Thats great! Ive never been to America. I have been abroad before. Ive travelled to Poland as a tourist. Ive also been on a business trip to Hungary. But Ive never been outside Europe.

This is great! I have heard and read so much about London. Ive always wanted to visit it. You have been to Great Britain, havent you? Yes, I have. How many times have you been there? Several times. When did you last go there? I went there a week ago. I have just returned from London. Hello! I havent seen you for ages. Hi! Ive just come from England. Really? How long have you been there? I have been there since Thursday. Have you seen any places of interest? Of course, I have. There are so many beautiful sights in London. Glad to hear that. Im afraid I must go. Nice to meet you. See you. Hello, could you give us some information about Londons most famous sights? What have you already seen in London? We havent seen anything yet. We have only just come. Have a look at the leaflets over there and take what you like. Lets start with a London sightseeing tour on a double-decker bus. OK, fine. Lets go to Trafalgar Square. The tour starts from there. Have she ever been to England? Yes, she has. When was she in England? She went there last year. But she hasnt been in America, has she? No, she hasnt. It has always been her desire to visit that country. But she has never had a chance. Thats too bad. Practice with the partner the following dialogues:
