2 Have you ever heard about our town? Have you ever been to KAMEN-NA-OBI? If not, then
3 And this is the photo of our town made by the satellite (sputnik) from space. Kamen-on-Ob is situated in the north-west of Siberia, in Altai Region.
4 It is situated on the bank of one of the greatest Siberian rivers, the Ob.
5 Many years ago it was suitable for navigation. Big passenger and cargo ships came to our town Today only a ferry and a small passenger boat I.Fuksmans ship float from one bank of the river to the other.
6 It is the old building of I.Fuksmans steamship line. It still stands on the same place but today it belongs to the Ministry of Emergency.

8 There is no unanimous opinion about the year when Kamen appeared on the map of Russia. For the first time the name of the town was mentioned in the List of the Settlements of Siberian Region in According to the document of 1751 only peasants lived there. In many documents this year is considered to be the year of foundation of Kamen. Then it was a small village. It lay far from the main centres of Altai District and grew very slowly. But a very good position on a big river in the neighbourhood of a great number of villages turned Kamen into a famous centre of agriculture and trade. The hotel Ob. 9 In the year of 1895 there was a church, a candle store, a mixed gymnasium, a two-form vocational school, a church school, a school of grammar and a post Bogoyavlenskiy Cathedral and telegraph office in Kamen. 10 There was a quayside, 10 shops, 160 stalls, 8 offices trading in butter, a drug store with a drug store shop, 3 transport offices, a bank department, some mills, a brewery, 3 soap factories, 2 tanneries, a saw-mill and many other small enterprises in Kamen at that time. Falkovs steam mill.

12 The Siberian railway gave a great push to the develop- ment of Siberia and Altai Region. In the 90-s of the XIX century Kamen became a big centre of trade in wheat The monument to70 anniversary of Kamen and at the beginning of the XX century it was a place trading in butter as well. On big cargos wheat was transported to different Russian towns in the North along the Ob. The merchants of Kamen traded with Denmark, England and the USA. In 1915 Kamen got the status of a town.
13 Kamen grew quickly and at the beginning of the XX century its population was 15 thousand. New plants and factories, new schools and a department of the Siberian trade bank appeared there. The house of the merchant A.S.Zorin. Now it is a printing office.
14 Such merchants as A.F. Vtorov, A.I. Vinokurov, A.S. Khomutov, P.Ya.Pudovkin and A.S.Zorin played an important role in the life of Kamen. A.I.Vinokurovs house. Today it houses the town museum, a cafe, shops and Art school.
15 During the years of the first World War the development of our town went slowly. The fire that broke out at the beginning of the twentieth century destroyed many houses and factories that were built out of wood. Glavnay Street
16 Shishkins stores. Merchant Milovidovs theatre and a hotel. But some buildings mainly made of stone remained to our days. Many of them are the monuments of industrial architecture of Altai and still decorate the streets of Kamen. For example, you can see this house in Lenin street today but, of course, it has slightly changed for many years.
17 A.S.Zorins house. For many years it housed Kamen pedagogical college. Now a department of Pension Fund seats here.

19 Have you ever heard about the merchants from our town? What surnames are familiar to you? Do you like the houses built by Kamen merchants? Why do you think they built these houses? What does the monument to the 70 th anniversary of foundation of Kamen look like? Do you know any businesspersons of those times from the place you live in? Can you name them? Are there any old buildings remained in your place?
20 And this is the picture of the famous Mastodont. It was built at the beginning of the XX century by Yuri Kondratuk using the technology of russkaya izba without a single nail. This granary was 7 times bigger than Canadian ones.
21 Yuri Vasiljevich Kondratuk was a scientist, an inventor and one of the creators of the space flights theory. His life and his name were covered with legends and mystery. His real name was Alexander Shargei. He studied, fought at war, built but never stopped thinking about space. He perished in 1942 under Moscow. One of the streets of Kamen was named after Y.V.Kondratuk. His creation Mastodont burnt down at the end of the XX century.
22 In various periods of time famous people of Russia lived and worked in Kamen-na-Obi. V.M.Pukhnachev, I.A.Pyryev, I.V.Titkov a poet. a film-director a Peoples artist
23 Have you ever heard about our famous countrymen? Have you seen a Pyryev film Svinarka i Pastukh? Do you know that I.Pyryevs wife played the leading role in this film? What is her name? Have you ever seen pictures by I.V.Titkov?
24 After the end of the Great Patriotic War the industry in the town began to develop and the population began to grow. The years of cultivation of virgin lands made great influence on the development of Kamen. The railroad came to the town. At the beginning of the 50s many brick houses with modern conveniences and factories were built. In a cinema, many shops, big plants, a modern drug, many schools, including musical and sports ones, and kindergartens were built here.
25 Kamen got a new building of the main hospital. Not only citizens of the town but people of the neighbourhood are treated here.
26 The Memorial of Glory was opened on the 9 May 1975 to the 30 th anniversary of our Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
27 This railway bridge connected the two banks of the Ob in 1963.
28 Today the second line of this bridge has been built.
29 In the evenings all people of the town, the young and the old, children and grown ups, like to walk along the embankment of the Ob. Many town performances are held here.
30 For many years Kamen was a place where pilots from Barnaul Air Force school learnt to fly. Today they have left the town but this plane and the houses built by soldiers remind us of them and their role in the life of Kamen.
31 In 1969 television came to Kamen. Since 2011 we have digital television. Three newspapers are published here. Severnye Electricheskije Seti
32 And this is what our town Kamen-na-Obi looks like nowadays.
33 Some years ago the medical college got its new modern building that, without doubt, has decorated our town.
34 In the 90-s of the last century as everywhere in Russia great changes began to take place in our town.
35 New shops, firms and private enterprises appeared in Kamen. They have changed the image of our town to better and have opened a new page in the history of Kamen.
