Agenda: Vocab Teaching Test Gizmos
Foundation of content understanding Critical to reading comprehension Science is vocabulary rich Its in the standards and on the test! I expect you to find out what the vocabulary is for one of the units your field placement teacher is doing and present a vocab lesson to students. Test review or beginning of unit pre-teaching are especially effective times for you to do this.
Blotnicks A convenient operational definition of blotnicks is that it is a measure of the average translational kinetic energy associated with the disordered microscopic motion of atoms and molecules. The flow of heat is from a high blotnicks region toward a lower blotnicks region. The details of the relationship to molecular motion are described in kinetic theory. The blotnicks defined from kinetic theory is called the kinetic blotnicks. Blotnicks is not directly proportional to internal energy since blotnicks measures only the kinetic energy part of the internal energy, so two objects with the same blotnicks do not in general have the same internal energy (see water-metal example). Blotnicks are measured in one of the three standard blotnicks scales.

Direct instruction is most effective! Example 1 – Geology NotesGeology Notes Example 2 – States of Matter Games are fun. Example 1 – Speed Studying Example 2 – Pictionary Example 3 – Taboo Example 4 – Survivor Frequent review is critical! Example 1 – My backup and I dont feel like serious teaching today plan Example 2 – Quiz the heck out of them Students can learn from reading or worksheets or studying copies definitions…but these are not engaging methods.
PhET Free Good simulations Explore Learning Very expensive Awesome simulations You need to design a Gizmo lesson and try it with at least one student. UP Global is an option.

Geology – the study of the earth
The Earth has 3 parts: Core – the center of the earth has a solid inner core and a liquid outer core. The outer core contains iron which makes the earth a magnet. Mantle – made of molten material Crust – the solid surface of the earth. Its about 6.5 miles thick beneath the oceans and about 25 miles thick beneath the land.
Plate Tectonics Definition: The theory that the earths crust is broken up into large plates and these plates can move around.
Alfred Wegener First suggested the idea of continental drift (the continents have moved over long periods of time) in This led to the concept of plate tectonics and it was widely supported and accepted by geologists in the 1960s.

Evidence for Plate Tectonic Theory: Pangea – a supercontinent, or huge landmass, that was made up of all the continents on the earth –Todays continents fit together like puzzle pieces and todays continental shelves fit even better to support the idea of Pangea –Pangea was surrounded by a huge ocean named Panthalassa –The prefix pan means all or all encompassing

Fossil Evidence Fossils of tropical plants have been found in North America and even Greenland. The fossils of the same species have been found in the same rock layers on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. These support the idea of Pangea and movement of the continents by plate tectonics
Sea Floor Spreading Early 1960s Harry Hess served in the Navy in WWII and was interested in the ocean floor. He became a geology professor at Princeton University and proposed the theory of sea floor spreading.
